BOTTOMLESS COFFEE BAND 2018

Bottomless Coffee Band – Swakopmund – June 2018.

We Swakopmunder’s don’t often get to see live bands from distant countries. So when one decided to pay us a visit we don’t think twice about buying ourselves a ticket!

…made us feel like we belonged, like there were other kids out there who we could relate to…

The extremely talented Bottomless Coffee Band made it all the way to Swakopmund on the 8th of June, driving all the way from Cape Town in their jam-packed band-bus. They had to fit TWELVE, that’s right, TWELVE musical instruments inside the van along with the two artists and band manager! And not to mention having to get all these instruments over the border in one piece…

How crazy is that?

Needless to say we had no choice but to bring our camera gear along to capture these creative spirits in action. Also, they were performing in the hall right across our office so we couldn’t say no.

We were blown away by Este’s voice and Lourens’s guitar skills, not to mention Lourens’s fancy footwork. He basically played the role of a complete drummer, using only his feet and a intricate foot-drum kit. I personally couldn’t comprehend how he managed to sing with his mouth, play the guitar with his hands, and the drums with his feet, all at the same time? He was probably the only man in the known universe who could multitask like that.

But it wasn’t only their music that interested us. We felt a deep connection to their story as artists. They had quit their jobs a few year past to pursue their dream full-time, just as we had done. They were also a couple who worked together every single day, just as we did. And from what we could see, they were loving every second. It made us feel like we belonged, like there were other kids out there who we could relate to.

While listening to their music, we thought about our journey and how being a full-time creative in today’s world, especially Africa, isn’t as easy as it seems. We constantly thought about how they dealt with the problems we often face a professional creatives. How were they even able to perform in front of so many people with so many other potential problems nibbling at the the back of their minds? All these doubts kept circling my mind as I watched Lourens tear up his guitar.

…Bottomless Coffee Band, you guys are a lesson worth learning…

 

Their song “Mr.Selfishness” especially spoke to me, and made me realise that other people outside your circle might also be struggling with the same stuff you are. This made me feel at ease somewhat, and thankfully brought me back to the moment.

But that’s how it goes in the creative industry. One moment you are flying high, and the next you are falling into the depths of doubt. But if you keep on going, you will make it. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from Este and Lourens, it is that it is indeed possible to enjoy the ride as well as the destination.

Thank you Bottomless Coffee Band, you guys are a lesson worth learning, and heck inspiring to boot!
